A Half Century on the Course: Tim O’Neil Celebrates 50 Years at Moselem Springs

Tim O’Neil walked into Moselem Springs Golf Club on a recent afternoon expecting an ordinary day. Instead, dozens of friends, coworkers, and longtime members were waiting to honor him for something almost unheard of in today’s world: 50 years of service at the same place.

O’Neil’s roots at Moselem run deeper than most realize. His parents, Kermit and Leah, both worked at the club. His brothers, Lynn and Mike, did too. Tim started as a caddie in 1974, joined the grounds crew the following spring, and never left. He earned his Turfgrass Management degree from Penn State in 1980, returned to the crew, and eventually became only the third superintendent in the club’s 60-plus year history.

“The first day that I came here, I was mowing number one green, and the bank was wet,” O’Neil recalled with a laugh. “I ended up going down the bank with the mower.”

Since that day, he’s been the quiet force behind every smooth green and manicured fairway the membership enjoys. He and his 10-person team manage 245 acres of the George Fazio-designed course, a property known for its beautiful vistas, its great collection of par 3s, and its reputation as a hidden gem nestled between Allentown and Reading.

“What I love most about the job is the challenges change on a daily basis,” O’Neil said. “No year is the same as the last. When you are here at 5 a.m., seeing the sunrise, and here at night, seeing the sunset, it’s hard to find a nicer office.”

Club member Ted Wolf calls O’Neil “a quiet force,” adding, “the course is always in the best condition it could possibly be. What’s so striking about Tim is he’s such a humble person.”

Member Lee Oxman, who has been at Moselem for over 30 years, echoed that sentiment: “These days, there is a lot of turnover at courses with people always trying to use a club as a means to get to a better club on paper. It says a lot about what Tim thinks of the club for him to be here for half a century.”

Even ownership recognizes how rare this kind of dedication is. “Fifty years. Just unbelievable,” said Luke Jaindl. “We don’t really have anyone else with that kind of longevity. It’s a true testament to the kind of person he is.”

For Tim, it comes down to something simple: pride in the product.

“The most rewarding part of my job is the days when we seem to get the golf course right and present a really good product. When you see people out playing your course, and they are enjoying it, you feel good. Being part of Moselem Springs’ journey for the last 50 years has meant a lot.”
